"With the certification scheme "OK biobased", TÜV AUSTRIA INDIA offers certification for biobased products made from renewable raw materials."

TÜV AUSTRIA Certification Scheme: OK biobased

Renewable Resources

As active drivers for sustainable development, multiple companies are proactively searching for alternatives to fossil-based raw materials. Several manufacturers are making synthetic materials using as their base starch, cellulose, lactic acid, “bacterial fat”, etc. By so doing, these companies contribute in an innovative manner to resolving the economic and environmental problem of fossil fuels and greenhouse gases.

Because of the increased environmental awareness among customers, there is a growing market for products based on renewable raw materials. And this environmentally-conscious motivation on the part of customers is precisely the reason why there is a need for an independent, high-quality guarantee of the renewability of raw materials and products.

The “OK biobased” and NEN BIO-BASED CONTENT certifications meet that need perfectly.

In contrast to LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), the investigation method behind the OK biobased certification is very simple and the exact value can be precisely and scientifically measured and calculated. This renders checks and re-checks very transparent and also allows “apples to be compared with apples” with the greatest ease.

On a basis of the determined percentage of renewable raw materials (% Bio-based), your product can be certified as one-star-bio-based, two-star-bio-based, three-star-bio-based or four-star-bio-based.

NEN BIO-BASED CONTENT

This certification system is based on the European standard EN 16785-1, which enables an independent assessment of claims related to the bio-based content of products.

How much does an OK biobased certificate cost?

The cost of an OK biobased certificate depends on the product type, materials used, and any previous OK biobased certification. Some products require detailed analysis, while others need simpler testing.
Therefore, we need a clear product description to prepare an accurate quotation. To receive a price offer, simply submit a completed application form.

How long does the OK biobased certification process take?

The OK biobased certification process has two main steps.

First, the applicant compiles a technical dossier and provides all required information. This step depends on how quickly the data is submitted.
Second, TÜV AUSTRIA analyzes the biobased content and total carbon (TC), evaluates the results, and issues the certificate. This step usually takes four to six weeks.

Which products qualify for OK biobased certification?

All products made partly or entirely from bioplastics or materials of natural origin qualify for OK biobased certification.
However, the scheme does not apply to fuels, as specific standards already exist for them.

What requirements must an OK biobased product meet?

Each product must meet both of the following requirements:

  • The total carbon content must be at least 30%
  • The renewable (biobased) carbon content must be at least 20%

You can request the OK biobased test programme for full technical requirements by product type.

Can basic materials or intermediate products be certified?

Yes. Basic materials and intermediary products can also receive the OK biobased certificate.

Can a component or part carry the OK biobased label?

No. A product may display the OK biobased label only when the entire product is certified.
Individual parts or components cannot carry the label on their own.

How do I apply for an OK biobased certificate?

To begin the certification process, you need to submit:

  • A completed OK biobased application form
  • A detailed product description
  • Product samples for testing

Once we receive these items, the certification process can begin.

How is the biobased percentage measured?

Both fossil and renewable raw materials contain carbon. However, they differ in carbon isotope C14 content. Living organisms contain a known level of C14, while fossil materials contain almost none.

By measuring the C14 activity level, laboratories can determine the share of renewable versus fossil carbon in a product.
For example, if a product shows 80% C14 activity, it contains 80% renewable carbon and 20% fossil carbon.

This method does not measure product age. Instead, it identifies the proportion of renewable carbon accurately and reliably.
