Life Cycle Assessment Approaches
What is LCA?
The successive and interconnected stages of a product or service system, from the extraction of natural resources to its final disposal, are called its life cycle.
Life cycle assessment (LCA) is the process of assessing the environmental impact of a product over its entire life cycle. It can be used to examine the environmental impact of a product or the function it is designed to perform.
LCA is commonly referred to as “cradle to grave” analysis.
LCA’s 3 Main Goals
- Identify and quantify relevant environmental burdens
- Assess the potential environmental impacts of these loads.
- Assess available options to reduce these environmental impacts.
LCA helps businesses:
✔ Identify hotspots of environmental impact
✔ Make data-driven decisions for sustainability
✔ Improve resource efficiency and reduce costs
✔ Meet regulatory & eco-labeling requirements (e.g., EPD, PEF, EU Taxonomy)
✔ Enhance brand reputation with credible environmental claims
